I must be missing something here...
...Because when I see McCain going on and on about how he doesn't think we should "spread the wealth", what I hear is him saying "I want to keep all my money so you poorer folk can keep on struggling." Are all of his constituents millionaires? I don't get it.
(I also don't get how he can be so adamant about Obama being a "socialist" because he wants to "spread the wealth" when just a few years ago McCain himself publicly spoke about how those who have more should have to pay a bit more.)

This is McCain's problem with some conservatives. He has changed his positions too many times.
You aren't missing something, McCain is lol.
Thumbs down to McCain.
You said it!!! What is wrong with spreading the wealth. That makes me see how selfish the McCains are with their millions, they and their rich constituents do not want to pay anymore taxes than they can get by with. If I was that wealthy, I would not mind in the least paying higher taxes. That is exactly what Obama has said, he said me and Michelle are willing to pay higher taxes because we have been blessed to make over $250,000. Obama is right, he is the true Christian and I don't play religion in politics and he is not saying that but I am. He and his wife are compassionate people who do care about the low and middle income who are struggling. They have been there. The McCains have never struggled for one day in their lives. They have absolutely no understanding of the middle-class people. Did you notice how he just could not bring himself to say that word in the debates. Like it was disgusting to him and it probably is. He is so out of touch with the real world that the majority of us live in that it is impossible for him to see. Great post.
@wesermol - He'd probably say it with air quotes...
Socialism is a red herring. (Bonus points for anyone who can name the movie that is adapted from.) Everyone who is screaming "Socialist! Socialist!" as an invective better have not paid school taxes, otherwise they are participating in a socialist program, and are, as such, hypocrites. Everyone pays real estate taxes which in large part fund the public school system. You pay these taxes whether or not you have kids, whether or not you homeschool or send your kids to private schools, whether or not you own your home or rent [the tax is hidden in your rent]. As the term is being thrown around today, socialism is the taking of money from someone who has more and giving it to someone who has less (with the implication that the person who has less is "lazy".) So if Family A can afford to pay to send their kids to any school, and Family B can't, but Family A has a house with a higher value (because they aren't lazy. Or maybe they married into a lot of money) than Family B, they pay more towards the establishment of a public school, where Kids A and Kids B can all get equal educations. Where they can learn the definition of SOCIALISM, and discuss how evil it is (or isn't.) Where they can learn to rationalize and realize that a lot of conservative/fundamental Christians tend to side strongly with Republicans in decrying "socialism" despite their religion strongly suggesting that it is everyone's duty to help out the less fortunate. EVERYONE'S duty, and ALL the less fortunate. Not just the ones you deem worthy.
And don't forget on McCain's scale of the middle class, I guess I am in the poverty level. I guess I'm just lazy, with my college education from a prestigious school and my respectable professional job. The one that I wasn't able to afford health insurance for my kids with.
[ps, when I homeschooled my kids, I never thought twice about paying my taxes to the school district, because I knew I was helping another family to get an education when they didn't have the option I had. That's not socialism. That's human decency.]
Obama isn't socialist! we have been Neo-Con so long no one knows what FAIR means!
throw in the hat the word "liberal". that seems to be the new age "terrorist" or SOMEthing. i can't fathom how being free is equated with evil in any manner. unless of course your freedom(be it of thought or movement) threatens the supposed sanctity of those that wish to keep you imprisoned and/or oppressed....
i really need them to look up these words before they throw them around so loosely. and I swear if anyone is reading this, go on youtube and look up this guy on there named "bloggerinterrupted". he has captured the pure ignorance of people who support mcain/palin.
*stepping off soapbox temporarily*
@kadair - Bravo, that comment should be a post in itself.
I see the Dem-lib "Woe-is-me" platform is alive and well here. I'm just curious, what do you think a fair wage for the job that you do should be. And how much of that are you willing to give away to someone else?
@gefforyt - I'm not sure where you get the idea that I was throwing any sort of a pity party anywhere in my post. If you're gonna bring that up, I heard a lot of complaining by Joe the Plumber and others.
A fair wage for my job? Well, that's a whole other can of worms seeing as I'm a "stay-at-home" mom, but I don't think we need to get into that whole discussion. As for my husband, though, we're in the top tax bracket and I'm happy to pay that money to help support a system that allows people to work from nothing and become successful, and to have the peace of mind of having a safety net if one day we happen to fall on hard times.
@mightymarce - Thanks. There are lots of times that I start a reply to one of your posts and end up thinking I should just post it in my blog. lol
@gefforyt - Seriously, you do not want to get any of us started on fair wages. Fair wages for females in America do not exist. The standard explanation: women interrupt their careers to have babies. Because of the POSSIBILITY that women might interrupt their careers their starting salaries are often lower than a man's.
And yet, many people would also deny us the right to control our own reproduction, even though not being able to control our reproduction decreases our wages, making it harder for us to support the children we were told we had to have (and then told, "you shouldn't have had kids if you couldn't support them.") I hear a John Lennon song playing, but since no one got my Clue reference above, I'm not sure if anyone will get my Lennon reference.
How much am I willing to give away? As much as I can, in order to create a more stable society. As the gap increases between the haves and the have nots, the anger increases, and with the anger comes theft and violence, and a tear in the fabric of society. As the poor get poorer, it becomes harder for families to properly raise their children, limiting their access to education and good food, creating a generation of people who are unable to care for themselves and are burdened with health problems from lack of access to decent food and health care. How much am I willing to give away? As much as I can. How much are you willing to give away? Or would you rather spend it on fences and security and guns to keep the "bad people" away from your stuff?
Ok, maybe i got a little carried away with that remark. But the point I am trying to make is this: if you make $200, 000 a year, and yes this is what Obama's benchmark is now. One Obama advisor has even said that it is more likely to be around $175,000 per year but lets just stick with the first # for now. At $200,000 per year you are going to be taxed at a min. of 40%. This money will come directly out of your paycheck before you pay your mortgage, your car payment, your health insurance and yes, even before you invest in your own child's future education and your retirement. If you are making $200,000 per year, you are going to be taxed an additional $20,000 per year. Since you are a stay at home mother I am sure you are probably well aware what it takes to run your household. Now you get to run your household on $20,000 per year less than you are used to. And why is that? You and your husband have worked hard to earn your money. probably spent alot of time in school, alot of hours at the workplace, and yes I know that being a stay at home parent is a job in itself, probably more stressful than an outside the home job.
My wife is a breast cancer survivor. From the day that she was diagnosed with cancer (8 years ago this january) we made a promise that we would donate 5% of our combined yearly salary to The American Cancer Society. She even made me promise that if she did not recover, that I would continue the donations as long as I was able. We donate this money because it is a great cause and we chose to do this with OUR money. What we choose not to do with Our money is give it to someone that refuses to better themselves with education and a better paying job. And that is exactly what these new taxes are going to do with OUR money. There are already programs in this country that will allow anyone with a desire to be more; achieve that goal. There is over $136 billion in educational funding just sitting in the bank drawing interest because no-one wants to go out and get that money and go to school to land a better job. They would rather sit at home with their hands out waiting for someone like Obama to steal someone elses money and give it to them.
@kadair - you have got to be kidding. Who is telling you that you don't control your reproduction? It is called being responsible. if you are not ready to start a family, use birth control. Condoms and the pill or any other of the other million forms of birth control are at your disposal. So if you become pregant because you are being irresponsible, it is the rest of sociaty's fault? get a grip. You say that you will give as much as you can, but how much is that.?
when was the last time you walked in to McDonald's and told the clerk
to just keep the change because you know she needed it? And if you want to know who is making more money, do some research and you will find that female workforce in McCain's camp all make more than the males. And it is exactly the opposite in the Obama camp. These numbers and statistics are available to any one that wants to take the time to actually do some research. But just in case you don't here is the link. Be sure to read the whole article.
@gefforyt - I have to speak up here, because you make a mistake that really irks me every time I see it-- unintended pregnancies are not always a cause of lack of contraception. I know several women who got pregnant while on the pill, or using condoms, etc. There's a reason any form of contraception has a failure rate, that means that up to 15% of people who use them even perfectly as directed (that's the condom failure rate), will still get pregnant. Saying women only get pregnant because they're being "irresponsible" is just plain dumb and wrong.
As for the rest of it, I could continue this argument with you but it comes down to the last part in your comment to me-- you apparently believe that anyone who is not successful, is there because they're not trying. Which is sad in how wrong it is. It also smacks of this idea that money should go to (and stay with) those who "work hard enough to deserve it." I wonder what that says about those who are rich but lucked into it, like the Paris Hiltons of the world. If someone like her isn't taking the time to better herself, should her money be taken away and given to that welfare mom who's working 2 jobs to try to make ends meet? Hmmm.... I realize I'm borderng on the ridiculous here, but one of my biggest pet peeves is this idea that the rich are rich because they earned it, and the poor are poor because they aren't working hard enough, which is so overly simplified and wrong and unjust. And if we disagree on this fundamental point, then it's going to be near impossible to have a meaningful discussion about any of the issues that stem from this.
One last thing-- do remember that $200,000/yr is a lot of money. Yes, a household can be expensive... but it's all about choices. We live in an area that's very expensive, and even with a healthy salsary can't afford to buy a house yet. But it's our choice to live here, and we could always move someplace cheaper and be able to buy much more. Fancy cars and designer handbags are not life necessities. I am glad to forgo those so that others can have access to basic education and preventative healthcare, things I do consider necessities.
@gefforyt - see. "Dem-Lib". you lost me right after that word. i just heard Charlie Brown's teacher shortly thereafter. "wonk wonk wonk wonk wonk".
@gefforyt - So you agree that minimum wage is not a fair (or liveable) wage.
